One of the most popular & controversial anime series of the last decade, Sword Art Online is a show that's intensely divisive, with fans & critics both being equally passionate. Viewers range from the hardcore advocates who praise it as a revolutionary title in the isekai genre to vocal critics who are completely baffled as khổng lồ how and why the show has gained so much popularity. So how did Sword Art Online's popularity become so controversial in the anime community?

*

Sword Art Online follows protagonist Kazuto Kirigaya, a high school otaku who loves clip games. After logging onto the VRMMORGP "Sword Art Online" & taking on the avatar handle "Kirito," the boy soon discovers he's trapped in the virtual world with no way khổng lồ escape. The series follows Kirito and his friends' adventures as they attempt to lớn escape SAO, as well as other đoạn clip game universes in the anime's later seasons. Though the video games change throughout each arc, the blurring of lines between clip games and reality is ever-present.

The anime is based upon a light novel series by Reki Kawahara that shares the same name. Since the anime's release in 2012, Sword Art Online has produced additional seasons & an original movie.

Hardcore Sword Art Online superfans, who've stuck with the series for all four seasons, praise the show's evolution from season khổng lồ season. Each season has improved upon the last, a statement reflected in Season 4's current score of 7.58 on My
Anime
List. Plus, since the show's main focus changes every arc, dedicated fans love how the stakes are constantly shifting and raising for Kirito và his friends. Additionally, as an isekai, Sword Art Online features a number of fight sequences that, even during some of the show's weaker seasons và arcs, are inarguably exciting to lớn watch & are beautifully animated.

Finally, Kirito's journey as an introvert in the real world to a praised clip game hero in the virtual one is a characterization that's appealing khổng lồ a wide range of audiences. Viewers sympathize và see themselves within Kirito's story, which may explain why so many fans have stuck with the anime for so long. In Season 1, Kirito was introduced as a lonely homebody who didn't have many friends in real life và spent most of his day on the computer. However, because of his experiences meeting people in clip games, his real-life persona has completely changed. He now has a huge group of friends (most of whom are beautiful ladies) and, if he ever escapes the Underworld, has plans khổng lồ attend a prestigious American university with his girlfriend, Asuna.

While hardcore fans have a long danh mục of reasons why they've supported the show for almost a decade, critics have also justified their dislike with an equally lengthy danh sách of cons.

From a purely technical standpoint, Sword Art Online's earlier seasons suffered from bad writing. The pacing was inconsistent, especially during the anime's initial arc, "Aincrad." Episodes quickly skipped over months and years, with minimal exposition to biến hóa for the lost time. This was mostly due to the anime's rushed attempt to lớn cover multiple story arcs over the course of 25 episodes in Season 1 và 24 in Season 2. As a result of this rushed style of writing, characters had little time & space lớn develop, leaving many fans critical of their shallow personalities, as well as the show's general lack of focus.

Luckily, most of these technical issues have been fixed since Sword Art Online's third season premiered in 2019, and have remained consistent through Season 4. Despite these technical fixes, there is another major issue that Sword Art Online critics have been vocally protesting for almost a decade now.

Since Season 1, every season of Sword Art Online has featured one scene where a female character is sexually assaulted, usually by a male villain character. Viewers have been incredibly vocal about their disgust over the exploitative nature of this repetitive plot device for years now. Yet, despite acknowledgment và apologies from Reki Kawahara, even the most recent season in 2020 featured an incredibly graphic scene. Combined with SAO's continued inclusion of fanservice-style portrayals of its female characters, it's not a great look for the popular isekai.

Whether viewers think Sword Art Online is the greatest anime franchise ever made or detest it with a passion & can't understand why it's become a global success, one thing is certain: Sword Art Online is a popular show và its legacy will remain for years to come.

I like SAO I watched it back in 2013 when it was airing on Toonami. It's what got me into anime seriously. I mean lớn me its pretty good. What vị you anime watchers think? It's not better than .Hack Sign tho. Speaking of that nobody really watches that. That's one of my best animes ive ever seen.

Because it is popular. People just hate anything that is popular because their favorite anime that they consider better are not as popular.

^That. If something is hyped up as being "SO good" và it turns out they're overhyping it, there are people who love to watch it crash và burn. I thought it was a fun watch, obvious plot holes but I enjoyed it nethertheless.

Well, it was also one of the first ones i watched shortly after starting watching anime seriously, so i have a soft spot for it. The first season was good, to lớn a certain extent, the first arc was good, the second was mediocre, but there are flaws in the writing overall và some characters were not well written/developed. On the other hand, the 2nd season was a disappointment for me. The movie was really nice, và so far i'm really enjoying Alicization. But why people hate it, don't really care about that, if they have justified arguments then i can live with that and respect their opinions, but for those who dislike it for nonsensical reasons only it's just ridiculous, but i don't give it that much thought.

Well I cant say I love SAO so much but I dont hate it eigher...when it comes to lớn Sao there are 3 types of ppl one who hates it và thinks its trash one who think it ok well yên ổn that group và ones who think its masterpiece and I dont blame them ... We all have our own tastes..I belive there are various reason ppl hate sao maybe its popularity harem super strong main charachter incest unanswered questions etc. I dont think they only hate ot because its popular Death lưu ý is popular aswell but I ve never seen someone hate Death cảnh báo (maybe there are but I ve never seen them ) to be honest I think Sao is fine not best but its good & I had fun watching it its just my ideas ofc..

I think this kind of thread has been reused for like thousands of times already but oh well. I used to like SAO back when i don't really watch anime as much as i vì now. But after i discovered a lot more anime i just think there's a lot of anime that is much better than SAO. But don't get me wrong though, i'm not hating SAO until now. I just think that now SAO is just kind of average khổng lồ me. Don't think too much about what other people say about what things you like. I lượt thích some shitty anime và manga but idc if people hating it, i enjoy what i like.

I always thought it was because it is the living embodiment of the edgy, overrated, OC Donut Steel side of the anime fandom. Not saying that this is true but it sure isn't false.

Idk. I found the series to be average at best. I stopped caring about it towards when it had movie and that GGO spinoff. My best guess is because it started the trend of the harem isekai stuff (i.e Isekai Maou, Death March anf Smartphone) , which is strange since SAO is NOT an isekau but okay then.

If you have watched it for the first time and think its great... Please be my guest, i completely understand you i have been there i used to lượt thích it when i first watched it, but as time passes và you watch a lot of anime, "isekai" in general, looking back at SAO you will realise its really nothing special because of many reasons (like no proper explanation khổng lồ why kirito is OP, unecessery harem in which all girls have crush on kirito, not a good storyline that can really compliment its hype) and that is the case with all people. Trust me on that!( With some exceptions)And if still after watching a shit ton of anime you think SAO is awesome, then my friend you are delusional
Sorry :(However SAO Season 3 is different and better IMO.

Having never seen it I can't point out specifics but I've seen it bashed a lot pretty much anywhere there is a general anime discussion going on. On the flip side I've never actually seen anyone make any solid points as khổng lồ why it's great.I mean according khổng lồ MAL it's pretty highly rated. It's almost certain that the reason for that is multifactoral. Anything from young teenagers watching it who would think it was amazeballs because they are too young lớn have seen The Matrix khổng lồ people rating it highly as a statement because they really enjoyed it và recently got told by someone it was gash to people who genuinely watched it & thought it was great annnnnd everything in between.Given it's popularity there's enough review/analysis videos out there for me to lớn be pretty sure at this point that it isn't for me (some of the đánh giá actually make a lot of valid points if you give a shit about plot và character development) but I still say the best judge of whether something is "good" is yourself. If you wanna watch it, watch it. Make an assessment.I'm olddddd greeeeeeeeeeeg! Sorry. EDIT:- Just as an aside, there is such a thing as having bad taste. There's a lot of subjectivity khổng lồ it but you can draw some general lines around it. I'd stake money that more people in fact have bad taste than good. I mean look at music and the UK đứng đầu 40. Full of complete shite, but millions of people with poor taste eat that shit up. There's also such a thing as having bad taste & being perfectly OK with that.
